Real Zante Wedding – Joanne and Steven 2018

If you are dreaming of a boho inspired, beach wedding then you will love what we have to share with you today….

Joanne and Steven said their I do’s with the blue sea as their backdrop on the island of Zakynthos in June 2018 and we’re delighted to be sharing their love story with you all!

Why did you choose to get married in Zante,  Vasillikos Beach in particular?

It just looked like such a beautiful relaxed venue and very in-keeping with the boho/beach wedding theme that we wanted and envisaged for our special day. It was our first ever trip to Greece and we were most certainly not disappointed when we arrived at the venue, having only previously seen it in photographs. It was everything we hoped for and more.

How long in advance did you book your wedding?

Approximately 18 months in advance.

How many guests did you invite to your wedding and how many accepted and attended?

We invited around 50 people and we were lucky enough to have 42 of those accept and attend the event, it meant a lot to us that so many of our family and friends were prepared to make the journey out to celebrate with us in Zante, especially my sister, my brother in law and my new nephew who travelled all the way from Australia!

Your dress is the perfect style for a beach wedding! Where was this purchased and why did you choose this particular dress?

The dress was called ‘Hope’ and was by WED2B, a North East Bridal outlet. I tried two others before this and settled on this one as I felt it was very beach wedding like and I loved the understated sequin detail that I knew would catch the Greek sunshine in the photos. It also matched up with the style of my bridesmaids dresses perfectly. I have had so many compliments about my dress.

Can you tell us about your shoes and accessories, where were they from?

My accessories were from River Island and were not an intentional purchase, I came across the earrings and bracelet when shopping for a holiday bag!

The shoes were from high street store New look, I did not want a traditional court/stiletto heel as I knew this would be very difficult as the ceremony was on the beach. I originally intended on being barefoot but decided that a glitzy wedge shoe was ideal for comfort and for some much needed height! I love them and have worn them several times since!

The watch I wore on the day belonged to my Nana, who passed away many years ago, it stopped working in the days after her passing and I chose not to have it repaired. I was truly humbled to be able to wear it on the day so that a little piece of my much loved Nana was with me.

What about Steve’s attire? Did he choose a formal look or go down the casual route?

Steve wanted to be smart but casual and comfortable, we chose all of the grooms party attire from Next. The men wore Navy chinos and short sleeved linen shirts in white. Steve opted for the blue and white striped version for a contrast against all of the others. They also wore a tanned slip on loafer shoe and tan Italian leather belt. They all looked very dapper!

Tell us about the bridesmaids dresses, where were these from?

The bridesmaids dresses were the colour Mink and were my first wedding related purchase after booking Zante as they were a fabulous bargain from Asos. I chose the same colour but three different styles and lengths from the same range to create a mixture of looks for the photos. The girls suited the dresses perfectly and our littlest bridesmaid Freya wore a beautiful white rose bud/tulle style dress with some mink ribbon attached to blend in with the older girls.

Your bouquet is gorgeous, what flowers did you choose and were you happy with the result?

I chose a mixture of roses and chrysanthemums in baby pinks and white to tie in with the overall colour theme. I wanted for this to be quite relaxed and natural looking and when I received the flowers I was delighted…they were exactly as I had hoped.

We’d love to hear more about your wedding theme…

We chose a boho theme. I knew from the very start that I wanted to create quite a lot of the decoration myself so that I could feel as included in the arrangements as possible. I love feathers and dream catchers and wanted these to be incorporated in the day. We had many dream catchers blowing in the breeze and feathers scattered on the table. Our guests were absolutely blown away with the venue, the ambience and the décor.

Can you tell us more about the smaller details that you incorporated into the day….

We paid huge attention to detail when picking things for the day.

We had personalised wooden badges made for all of the grooms party to wear with their buttonhole flowers. I made all of the favour bags myself, filling them with green haribo turtles as we were at turtle island!

I made some love poems/verses for the tables too. I took illuminated table numbers out with me and made a beautiful table plan to hang in the trees.

All of the children at the party received a personalised party bag with colouring pencils, sweets, lace tambourines, blow up guitars and glow sticks. The parents all said how pleased the children were and how it helped to keep them entertained throughout dinner/speeches.

We chose a traditional Greek cake, which was delicious!

One of the biggest and most special moments for us was that our brother in law who lives in Australia sang at the wedding. He is a musician at home and a fabulous guitar player. I was truly honoured to be sung down the aisle to Van Morrison’s Brown Eyed Girl and then he kindly sang several well-chosen and poignant songs whilst we ate our evening meal. The guests absolutely loved it!

We enjoyed a lovely Greek Meze style BBQ for our meal and it was delicious!

How did you find the planning experience from booking to the big day?

The planning experience was really quite easy, the staff at The Bridal Consultant guide you through every part of the process but also welcome your own ideas and thoughts, after all this is your big day! Their support has been fantastic and they have offered some unique ideas too! Sasha was so helpful and very happy to answer my many questions…no matter how silly I thought they may seem!

What’s your best memory from the day?

After all the hustle and bustle of all 5 bridesmaids getting ready throughout the day with me, they all then left the room to get on the guest coach. I sat on the hotel bed with my hair, make up and dress on and took a brief moment to take it all in…suddenly there was a knock at the door and both my dad and stepdad were there as I opened it, it was quite an emotional moment for us all.

Also seeing my husband Steven crying as I walked down the aisle towards him, I will never forget that.

Having both my father and my stepfather walk me down the aisle together was also very special to me and seeing both of my daughters crying throughout the ceremony and having Steven’s son be our best man! Having both of our sisters be our witnesses.

There were just so many special moments…it was just an emotional day in every way.

What do you think makes a wedding abroad stand out from a wedding in the UK?

The beautiful scenery and weather is an obvious one, the relaxed, chilled atmosphere and standing saying your vows with the sound of the ocean behind you and the sand between your toes was just simply perfect! The feedback we got from our guests was outstanding and many said it was the best wedding they had ever been too! The staff at the venue were wonderful and very supportive and the wedding planning team out in Greece were fabulous! We opted for additional photography/videography and they were all superb. We will have some amazing photos to reflect on for many years to come..

What advice would you give to future brides and grooms who are getting married abroad?

Do not hesitate to book an abroad wedding, the planning and organising was seamless and far less stressful than you may imagine it might be, we have absolutely no regrets! We combined the wedding with a 14 day family holiday too, so we had the best of both worlds, spending time with people you don’t get to see very much in your normal busy daily lives in such a beautiful setting, then having all those people watch you say ‘I do’ and become husband and wife was something we will never ever forget. It was magical, it really was…
