Today we’re catching up with the newly weds to find out all about their special day, enjoy x
Why did you choose to get married in Santorini, Sunset View Terrace in particular?
We chose Santorini as believe it or not at the age of 31 and 32 myself and my partner have a bucket list, Brazil was on there where he proposed and Santorini was one of our places to visit and once we started looking for weddings abroad nothing else came close to Santorini, the place looked so beautiful. We came across the venue on The Bridal Consultant website and even though it hadn’t been built yet it blew us away, we wanted something that would wow our guests but at the same time be very casual, a good place for a party etc. The view looked unbelievable and it was even better seeing it in real life for the first time.
How long in advance did you book your wedding?
We booked our wedding around March 2015 which was just over a year in advance.
How many guests did you invite to your wedding and how many accepted and attended?
We had a guest list of around 100 but with it being abroad we knew we would get no where near but wanted to give people the choice, we were so pleased to end up with 40 guests coming all the way to Santorini for our big day.
Your dress is gorgeous! How long did it take you to find the perfect one and where was this from!?
My dress is a long story and the one I wore was a last minute buy the day before we flew (very stressful) ha, I bought my original dress from a beautiful shop in Morpeth, Northumberland called Kathryn Trueman and it was picked out by the lady helping me try some dresses on and it was exactly what I’d been looking for online, it was the Willowby by Watters Inez dress and my brother kindly bought it for me as a wedding present!
When I bought the dress I was actually 10 weeks pregnant and was a lovely size 10 but I ordered a 14 not knowing how my weight was going to go after having a baby so close to the wedding. After having my baby girl I did loose the weight quite quickly and had my dress altered four times, when it came to trying on my dress only two days before flying it was far too big around the top area and it was falling down as I walked 🙁 I didn’t have time to contact the shop or alter it and for some reason it put me off the dress a little bit and I had to frantically take my mother and my aunty to try to find another one within an hour and with limited money to spend.
The first shop I went into was an outlet shop selling new dresses but not designer and I selected four to try on, one of them was “the one” it was actually more fitting with the venue and place, very Grecian looking. It was very plain, simple but comfortable so I bought it and that’s what I ended up wearing on the day so not exactly what I pictured but I got nothing but great comments. So you really can find a dress last minute!!!!
Your shoes and accessories, where were these purchased?
I hunted Newcastle for my shoes, I always wear either flats or very high shoes but I needed something in between so my feet didn’t hurt too much so this was a task and a half as I’m not used to wearing that size heel. I found my shoes in Debenhams called Gamma Carvela Kurt Geiger in silver. They were perfect, not too high and I would wear them again maybe over Christmas with a black dress.
My head piece was also from Kathryn Trueman bridal shop after trying on about 11 of them this one stood out and it reminded me of my mothers dress (my mum was giving me away on the day so it was perfect).
Chris looks handsome in his suit! Where was this from?
The grooms suit was purchased from a high street store and it again was perfect, not too smart but not too casual. We picked a light grey trouser and waistcoat with a crisp white shirt, sleeves rolled up. My partner wanted to suit the venue also and we didn’t want full suits as we thought it would be too hot and uncomfortable.
Were your bridesmaids happy with your choice of dress for them?
Again I had a lot of stress with our bridesmaid dresses and the ones we had were the 3rd ones bought. Originally I ordered a pale grey floor length bodycon style dress which all four of my bridesmaids loved at the time, 8 months later one bridesmaid cancelled due to finding out she was due her baby the week of my wedding and one other bridesmaid had just recently had another baby boy and didn’t feel comfortable wearing the original dress as it was a very fitted style.
The next ones I bought were from a high street store and were not as formal but fitted with the theme of the wedding and colour scheme, again one of the bridesmaids wasn’t comfortable wearing this so we all decided to get together and go on a mad hunt for the perfect dress. We bought the multiway dresses from debenhams in 3 different colours which I thought looked a bit different and quirky, we had pale pink, silver and navy. They were lovely in the end.
We love your bouquet! Can you tell us a little more about this…
I’ve been involved in the wedding business for years and decided to tackle the flowers myself and I made my own bouquet and bridesmaids.
Did you theme your wedding?
There wasn’t a theme as such but my colours were mainly pale grey, silver and pinks. I thought these colours were different to a lot of weddings I’d seen before and thought they would really stand out in the sunshine. I wanted the room to look very fresh and twinkly to compliment the sunset and white decorated venue.
Tell us about the smaller details of the day….the cake, menu, decor and favours.
The wedding cake was lovely I sent the venue an image to copy and I think they did a great job. I again wanted something simple, it was two tiers plain white icing on the top tier and bottom was wrapped in a silver foil to add shimmer with small pink/raspberry coloured flowers on the top.
Our menu was bespoke as we wanted to add to it and we thought most guests would enjoy this menu. I must say the food was absolutely delicious and everyone commented on how great it was and how well presented it was. The dessert stole the show (fried ice cream) which many had not had before. The starter was my personal favourite it looked brilliant and tasted even better.
A friend of mine who had worked for the events company I worked for kindly gave me my table decorations. She provided me with silver table runners, a mix of different silver and white tea light holders to run along the table with some small lights that also ran along the table. We had mini bottles of alcohol for our favours as I always think guests appreciate those more than sweets or chocolates but that’s just my opinion. They went down great.
As you can imagine bringing all of the above to Santorini was hilarious. We had 7 suitcases and a small baby to take with us!
How did you find the planning experience from booking to the big day?
I actually found the planning very simple as The Bridal Consultant do most of the work. We wouldn’t have had a clue doing this abroad if we had of planned it alone. From start to finish everything was explained so well and nothing was a problem.
What’s your best memory from the day?
My best memory was just before heading down the aisle with my mum we were given a shot to drink by a lovely member of staff as I started to get really nervous which I just thought was such a nice and funny touch then seeing my groom waiting for me at the bottom was very special.
Was your wedding on budget or over budget?
We haven’t added up our total spend as of yet and don’t think we want to haha, but we did pay for it all out right prior to the wedding which we are very proud of and can now concentrate on other things for our future.
What do you think makes a wedding abroad stand out from a wedding in the UK?
Weddings abroad are just amazing, I really don’t think you can get the same experience at home. You are, for one guaranteed gorgeous weather. We also felt like our wedding lasted a week instead of just one day as we were surrounded by close family and friends for a week of celebrations. It was just a one off experience I will never forget and all of our guests have said the same. The venues abroad are so stunning and have things I think your typical hotel/function room at home just can’t compete with at all.
